    Doing well two weeks in

Ownroot roses were not shipped bare - they had most root balls and some foliage. They are growing more quickly than bare root plants, showing new foliage within one week of being planted. Time will tell, but this looks quite promising.

    not quite up to expectations

    Not quite as expected.
I had asked for the plants to be delivered the first week of April. They arrived the third - at which time I could do nothing but open the package, throw some water over them and put them in a cool dark place.
I ordered two plants. One arrived fully leafed out - which it shouldn't have been, based on 50 years of ordering bare-root plants - the other, quite dead. Not dark green and shrivelled, but dead.
When I did manage to get them out and to the pre-prepared plot, I found the root balls completely, and intentionally, impacted, compacted, and impossible to tease out. Perhaps they will grow this way, but being so ingrown, they will never produce healthy plants.
The packaging was far from professional. Using (tax-payer funded) USPS mailing enveloped for protection is simply - clever, but unprofessional. If you want to cut costs, you might consider collecting cardboard from behind shops! But this, though effective, was unprofessional.
So. I have some hope for the one plant, which has been in the ground nearly a week, and no hope for the dead one, which I planted beside it, 'in case'. In all, not what I had hoped, or expected, and a bit pricey for what I actually received.

    Hi S.E.,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m truly sorry to hear that it didn’t meet your expectations, and I appreciate the opportunity to clarify a few points.

When you placed your order, you initially asked for shipping “as late as possible,” ideally in April. You later revised your request to the first week of April, and we did our best to accommodate that adjustment. As noted on our website, customers may indicate a preferred shipping month, but not an exact delivery date, as timing depends on plant readiness, weather, and logistics.

Our roses are own-root, not bare-root and they are shipped year-round. It's completely normal, and even healthy, for them to arrive leafed out in spring. This reflects natural seasonal growth and is not a cause for concern.

The roots may appear compact, but they will naturally expand once planted. Teasing them apart is not recommended, as it may cause damage to the plant during this delicate stage.

We were also disappointed to hear that one of the roses did not survive. However, we’d like to note that we did not receive any photos or communication from you. We have a warranty program in place and are always happy to provide replacement credits for roses that arrive in non-viable condition, but we do rely on customers to reach out so we can help.

If you still have the plant and are able to send a photo, we’d be glad to assist. We truly value your support and hope to restore your confidence in our roses.

    Best,
    Evelyn

Very good experience as a first-time buyer

We ordered Jude the Obscure and Spirit of freedom from here three months ago. The plants we received were healthy and good size (compared to others ). The root tips are white, indicating they are growing well. We can’t wait to see the first flowers bloom! We also have ordered a few more roses recently and will provide update once we receive those plants to see if the quality is consistently excellent.
